Romans 12:2

MID-WEEK DEVOTION (this week from Tim Walsh)

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

The world is a broken place, run by a broken prince. This is why we must strive to be in this world and not of it, as Pastor Bryan said this past Sunday. I sometimes take the path of least resistance like water running down stream. We’re all encouraged to just “go with the flow” but what if that flow leads to a 1,000 foot waterfall over jagged rocks?

If we never stop to think about what we’re thinking, how we’re acting, who we’re hanging out with, what we’re posting, or the words we’re using, we just might be conforming to a pattern that has us headed for a fall.

Instead, in Romans 12:2, we are called to be transformed by a renewing of the mind. I think this means we’re supposed to think. 1 Corinthians 2:16 says we have “the mind of Christ” and Romans 8:6 says that “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” We must be reminded to use our minds, so that we “will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”world 3

Prayer: Father give us the power of discernment. Wake us up from the routines, patterns and habits that displease you. Help us to think, to test and approve what your will is, so that we may remain safely in it. Amen.

Introduction: Finishing John

1.  Jesus goes to prayer

– His custom Lk 5:16

– His concern Lk 22:31

– His crisis (here before the cross)

2.  Context

– Context is always important even in praying

– Explaining to God what he knows is for our prayer life

– Context here of eternal life and why He was sent

– Eternal purposes of God worked out in my life not visa versa.

Earth revolves around the Sun not the Sun around the earth.

3. Requests

–  Glorify thy son and that the Son my glorify the Father

– Blueprint for effective and answered prayer is the same

1.  Protection vs 11-12, 15

2.  Vulnerability to the world

World = secular system we live within

Struggle of “in” but not “of” the world

3.  Sanctify them by truth

– Word is truth

Jesus, the Risen and Exalted One

Reflecting on this past beautiful Easter weekend, and on the One we celebrate….

The perfect, unblemished lamb. The One who gave His life that we might live.

The humble servant. The One who washed the feet of His disciples. The true King, who bowed down to serve.

The intimate Friend. The One who knowing His horrifying, torturous death was close at hand, spent the evening before His arrest in deep, intimate fellowship with His disciples. Sharing encouragement, hope, and prayers for His followers.

The perfect, righteous One, who bore betrayal, false witnesses, and a false trial for our sakes. That through His death we may live.

The obedient Son. The One who was obedient to his very death, even death on a cross. Tempted beyond our understanding, yet desiring His Father’s will be done.

This is our Savior. This is the One we worship. This is the One we love. This is the One whose risen life we celebrate.  The Bright Morning Star, the Rising Sun, the Living One, the True Light.

This is our Savior, Christ Jesus.

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” Phil 2:9-11
